Mad Max certified 'Imagineer' - " I've been trying to get myself smarter on the VE44, specifically the differences between the intercooled and non-intercooled pumps, and also regarding the two versions of the KSB. I feel there is some basic, general info that is not well collected on the web, and so I've put the following together in an attempt to provide general info and hopefully it will help alleviate some confusion.
While I am fairly confident this info is accurate, please reply back with any corrections. Thanks to Mark at DieselTuff for some of the gospel truth below. The early pump was used in the non-intercooled Generally there are no major internal differences between the two pumps, and both use the same Bosch DGK rebuild kit.
The two visual differences include the output delivery valves the 6 output ports connected to the injector hard lines and the KSB. Both are good pumps. However, the output delivery valves are not common between the two pumps.Huckstorf Diesel is authorized by Bosch to rebuild the 5. We rebuild Dodge 5. Huckstorf Diesel will take the time to set your pump to the proper specifications and can even customize the pump to your needs. If you need your Dodge 5.
In the Cummins 5. These trucks are commonly referred to as the first generation, or 1 st gen Dodge trucks. The Cummins engine was rated at HP and foot pounds of torque. The VE injection pump had a maximum output of close to HP in the six cylinder version.
The VE pump uses a single high pressure piston to deliver the fuel shot to the injectors much like a distributor delivers the spark to the spark plugs in a gas engine.
Rollers move on a cam that pushes them together sending the fuel out the proper port to the injectors. Due to demand for higher horsepower and new emission regulations the VE injection pump was replaced in by the Bosch P inline style injection pump. Huckstorf Diesel is an authorized Bosch diesel injection service center serving the Milwaukee Wisconsin region and beyond.
We will be happy to rebuild your injection pump to like new or better specifications at a low cost and high quality standard! An estimated increase of hp and ft. You will feel the difference every time you drive!
BD makes these VE fuel pins from high quality Chromalloy steel and are machined with a duel process that are first rough milled with a precision radius angle cut, heat treated to the 52 Rockwell hardness scale, then a final precision ground radius cut. The kit also includes a rpm governor spring to extend the engine RPM band by rpm. This is can be installed yourself, or ask for this upgrade when having you pump rebuilt by the professionals at Huckstorf Diesel!
Looks easy right? No so much on the truck under the hood. It certainly can be done, but be awfully careful not to get dirt into the injection pump. Dirt will damage the intricate internal parts of the pump. If your pump is not nice and new like the one in the video, we recommend having these upgrades done at Huckstorf Diesel!

Some preferences to consider are fuel economy, horse power and torque, mechanical or electronically controlled fuel system, noise level, ease of installation, governed RPM limit, and purchase price. Click here to read more. The - engines are readily available, inexpensive, get the best fuel economy stock, and have decent torque. These use the Bosch VE rotary pump which can be adjusted to achieve a little more horse power. The non-intercooled engines can be intercooled if desired; it is highly recommended if you plan to turn the power up any to control exhaust temperatures.
It's possible to add HP with an inexpensive fuel pin so intercooling can be quite desirable. The and earlier engines may have a diaphragm style vacuum pump, which does not work as well as the later style pump in the conversion.
If you are planning to use an electronically controlled transmission, you should know that throttle position sensors are hard to come by for these, however, there are alternative sensor options available so it can be solved without much of a problem. The vacuum pump and power steering mounting bracket will interchange.
Sometimes the pumps and brackets are the same as the more conversion friendly - versions pictured below. In addition to these differences, some of the early engines have a different fan support that is higher and more centered with the engine.
These fan supports work ok in the - trucks, although the fan is too high for the stock fan shroud it is at least centered. It does not work so well in the and newer trucks as the fan will not fit under the radiator shroud, and the shroud cannot be raised as easily as the older trucks. We have been told from a few customers that it works ok in the - 6.
The older style fan hub does not work well if you plan on running a tachometer. The - Engines offer good power and torque, as well as good fuel economy. These engines have the Bosch P inline manual fuel pump which produces HP stock. With this pump, one can easily add HP by installing a fuel plate. These engines are possibly the most desirable Valves because power upgrades are easily accomplished with fuel plate adjustments etc. If you get an extremely good deal on an earlier engine it may be cost effective to convert it to a P pump if you like.
There are many horse power upgrades that can be done to any of the Valve engines without totally sacrificing fuel economy or reliability.Ve injection pump rebuild part 1
When using a Ford radiator that has the upper radiator connection on the passenger side, it is helpful to replace the thermostat housing with the housing we offer; it points straight up, so it makes the upper radiator hose connection easier. It includes a new thermostat and seals. When using this housing you will also need our Dodge alternator bracket. Radiators that have the upper hose connection on the driver side utilize the "new" style thermostat housing that points to the driver side of the truck.

For this engine we provide wiring instructions to help you make it run in your Ford or Chevy. You do not need the Dodge PCM to use this engine, although it is necessary if you want to use OBDII diagnostics or use an aftermarket tuner that requires the data link connector. Without the Dodge PCM, diagnostic information can still be accessed at a Cummins dealer through the Cummins data link connector located in the engine wiring harness, but certain performance programmers will not work as a result.Huckstorf Diesel has exchange fuel injection pumps for the Dodge Cummins trucks without intercooler systems.
These pumps are rebuilt using all the necessary parts to make the pump perform as good as, or better than new. Our technicians carefully inspect each part. We do not install inferior, lower quality, less expensive parts.
Each pump is carefully set to the high side of the Bosch specifications to give you the optimal performance. If you prefer to have your injection pump rebuilt instead of taking an exchange, we can certainly do that for you.
With this option we can sometimes save you money if your pump is in better shape than the average and need to install fewer parts than the average. We can also customize your pump for special applications that require different fuel calibrations than stock.
This does not apply if you send us your pump for rebuilding. We increased our core charge because people were sending in unusable cores. These pumps are getting scarce and replacements are getting tough to find. If you have good cores to sell please contact us. Create Account. Ford Ford 6. Core Returns Warranty Returns.

TST recommends a 16 cm2 turbine housings where stock is either 18 or 21 cm2, this turns boost up psi over stock. TST boost and pyrometer gauges also work on pre'94's.
Boost alone doesn't help much unless you also turn up fuel flow. The Bosch VE pump can be turned up by turning the power adjustment screw clockwise about 1 to 2 turns. This power adjustment screw is located on the firewall end of the injection pump under a plastic cover that will pop off.
There is a jamnut that must be loosened and a steel collar tack welded on this screw which must be removed to allow much power increase. There is no need to remove injection pump from engine to perform these adjustments. Once you turn up the fuel, you will likely need to adjust the idle linkage to turn idle speed down. You may also need to readjust smoke by adjusting tension on the boost diaphragm spring.
Spring tension is adjusted by turning the smoke adjustment screw, which is located under a small round cover plate on the top of the injection pump.
This cover plate is simply pressed into place and can be removed with a small screw driver or knife blade. If you cannot adjust the idle down to the desired speed, or the smoke to the desired smoke level, then you may have to turn the power adjustment screw counter clockwise to achieve the desired result.
On a very few engines turning the power adjustment screw clockwise will not turn up the power. On these engines the injector nozzles must also be replaced with higher flow nozzles in order to increase power.
