The Hartree atomic units are a system of natural units of measurement which is especially convenient for atomic physics and computational chemistry calculations. They are named after the physicist Douglas Hartree. In Hartree atomic units, the speed of light is approximately Atomic units are often abbreviated "a. Each unit in this system can be expressed as a product of powers of four physical constants without a multiplying constant.
This makes it a coherent system of unitsas well as making the numerical values of the defining constants in atomic units equal to unity. Five symbols are commonly used as units in this system, only four of them being independent: : 94— Below are listed units that can be derived in the system. A few are given names, as indicated in the table.
Atomic units, like SI unitshave a unit of mass, a unit of length, and so on.
However, the use and notation is somewhat different from SI. Suppose a particle with a mass of m has 3. The value of m can be written in three ways:. Dimensionless physical constants retain their values in any system of units. For example, the numeric value of the speed of lightexpressed in atomic units, has a value related to the fine structure constant.
Atomic units are chosen to reflect the properties of electrons in atoms. This is particularly clear from the classical Bohr model of the hydrogen atom in its ground state. The ground state electron orbiting the hydrogen nucleus has in the classical Bohr model :. For the special case of the electron around a hydrogen atom, the Hamiltonian in SI units is:. Both Planck units and atomic units are derived from certain fundamental properties of the physical world, and have little anthropocentric arbitrariness, but do still involve some arbitrary choices in terms of the defining constants.
Atomic units were designed for atomic-scale calculations in the present-day universe, while Planck units are more suitable for quantum gravity and early-universe cosmology.
Both atomic units and Planck units normalize the reduced Planck constant. The orbital velocity of an electron around a small atom is of the order of 1 in atomic units, so the discrepancy between the velocity units in the two systems reflects the fact that electrons orbit small atoms by around 2 orders of magnitude more slowly than the speed of light. There are much larger differences for some other units.
For example, the unit of mass in atomic units is the mass of an electron, while the unit of mass in Planck units is the Planck massa mass so large that if a single particle had that much mass it might collapse into a black hole.
The Planck unit of mass is 22 orders of magnitude larger than the atomic unit of mass. Similarly, there are many orders of magnitude separating the Planck units of energy and length from the corresponding atomic units.

Although the boats did not have any major design faults, they were known to be difficult to handle due to their poor stability and slow dive rate.
The type was based on the design of the Finnish Vetehinen class and the Spanish Type E-1 designed by Ingenieurskantoor voor Scheepsbouw the company also designed the Soviet S class submarine.
The design later served as a basis for the development of other types of boats, primarily the VII and IX classes. The two boats produced, U and Uwere primarily used as training vessels and for propaganda purposes to fly the Nazi flag.
Inthe boats were called into combat duty due to the shortage of available submarines. Both boats experienced short, but successful combat careers. U participated in five war cruises, sinking eight enemy ships. On 3 Augustwhile on a mine laying mission near NorwayU struck a mine and sank with all hands on board. U carried out eight war cruises, sinking three merchant ships and damaging one British warship on its first mission laying mines.
U participated in three other successful war patrols, sinking four additional merchant ships. On its eighth war cruise the boat sunk three merchant ships and damaged another ship the next day.
The crew scuttled the submarine and were rescued by Allied warships. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Working full-time for minimum wage does not pay enough to rent a modest two-bedroom apartmentanywhere in the country. In June, President Trump created an affordable housing council. And some Democratic presidential candidates are making affordable housing a priority on the campaign trail and in television ads. But cities are not waiting for the federal government to fix the shortage. Minneapolis is one of them.
It's making some sweeping changes to address affordable housing — such as changing zoning laws to increase density in certain areas. This process, known as "upzoning," has been tried or considered in Portland, Charlotte, Austin and Seattle. This year, Oregon's legislature passed a bill to upzone the entire state. Today's episode is part of our special series, 1A Across Americathat aims to bring more local and regional perspectives to the national conversation. We explored upzoning as one way cities are trying to close the housing gap.
We also spoke with Minneapolis residents and heard from you. Accessibility links Skip to main content Keyboard shortcuts for audio player. NPR Shop. Want to support 1A? It is also a fundamental component in the definition of another unit of astronomical length, the parsec.
A variety of unit symbols and abbreviations have been in use for the astronomical unit. Inthe IAU, noting "that various symbols are presently in use for the astronomical unit", recommended the use of the symbol "au", as did the American Astronomical Society AAS in the manuscript preparation guidelines for its principal journals.
Earth's orbit around the Sun is an ellipse. The semi-major axis of this elliptic orbit is defined to be half of the straight line segment that joins the perihelion and aphelion. The centre of the Sun lies on this straight line segment, but not at its midpoint.
Because ellipses are well-understood shapes, measuring the points of its extremes defined the exact shape mathematically, and made possible calculations for the entire orbit as well as predictions based on observation.
In addition, it mapped out exactly the largest straight-line distance that Earth traverses over the course of a year, defining times and places for observing the largest parallax apparent shifts of position in nearby stars. Knowing Earth's shift and a star's shift enabled the star's distance to be calculated. But all measurements are subject to some degree of error or uncertainty, and the uncertainties in the length of the astronomical unit only increased uncertainties in the stellar distances.
Improvements in precision have always been a key to improving astronomical understanding. Throughout the twentieth century, measurements became increasingly precise and sophisticated, and ever more dependent on accurate observation of the effects described by Einstein 's theory of relativity and upon the mathematical tools it used. Improving measurements were continually checked and cross-checked by means of improved understanding of the laws of celestial mechanicswhich govern the motions of objects in space.
The expected positions and distances of objects at an established time are calculated in au from these laws, and assembled into a collection of data called an ephemeris. Inin order to establish a yet more precise measure for the astronomical unit, the IAU formally adopted a new definition. Although directly based on the then-best available observational measurements, the definition was recast in terms of the then-best mathematical derivations from celestial mechanics and planetary ephemerides.
It stated that "the astronomical unit of length is that length A for which the Gaussian gravitational constant k takes the value 0. Subsequent explorations of the Solar System by space probes made it possible to obtain precise measurements of the relative positions of the inner planets and other objects by means of radar and telemetry.
As with all radar measurements, these rely on measuring the time taken for photons to be reflected from an object. Because all photons move at the speed of light in vacuum, a fundamental constant of the universe, the distance of an object from the probe is calculated as the product of the speed of light and the measured time.
However, for precision the calculations require adjustment for things such as the motions of the probe and object while the photons are transiting. In addition, the measurement of the time itself must be translated to a standard scale that accounts for relativistic time dilation.
Bythe IAU had updated its standard measures to reflect improvements, and calculated the speed of light at This replaced the previous definition, valid between andwhich was that the metre equalled a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton The reason for the change was an improved method of measuring the speed of light. Inthe BIPM reported a value of the astronomical unit as 1.
This estimate was still derived from observation and measurements subject to error, and based on techniques that did not yet standardize all relativistic effects, and thus were not constant for all observers.
